She's melanistic, hence her darker appearance. And her markings come from the fact that she evolved in a cave FULL of water stones. The stones gave more influence on her since there were more, and thus gave her minor bio-luminescence, hence the blue markings and freckles. They glow when she's underwater, and MIGHT glow at night.
